Facing the Future: Evolutionary Possibilities forHuman-Machine Creativity
نویسنده
چکیده
This chapter examines the possibilities and challenges that lie ahead for evolutionary music and art. Evolutionary computing methods have enabled new modes of creative expression in the art made by humans. One day, it may be possible for computers to make art autonomously. The idea of machines making art leads to the question: what do we mean by 'making art' and how do we recognise and acknowledge artistic creativity in general? Two broad categories of human-machine creativity are defined: firstly, machines that make art like, and for, humans; and secondly, machines that make 'art' that is recognised as creative and novel by other machines or agents. Both these categories are examined from an evolutionary computing perspective. Finding 'good' art involves searching a phase-space of possibilities beyond astronomical proportions, which makes evolutionary algorithms potentially suitable candidates. However, the problem of developing artistically creative programs is not simply a search problem. The multiple roles of interaction, environment , physics and physicality are examined in the context of generating aesthetic output. A number of 'open problems' are proposed as grand challenges of investigation for evolutionary music and art. For each problem, the impetus and background are discussed. The paper also looks at theoretical issues that might limit prospects

Evolutionary Design of Digital Circuits - an Alternate Approach to the Conventional Logic Design
Conventional design is based on top-down method employed by human designers. This kind of design employs a previous experience and a mysterious process of discovery, which originates in the human mind and is often called intuition or creativity. Unfortunately, this previous experience is in fact a collection of rules, concepts, and principles, which is a strong limiting factor in creativity and...
متن کاملAn Empirical Exploration of a Definition of Creative Novelty for Generative Art
We explore a new definition of creativity — one which emphasizes the statistical capacity of a system to generate previously unseen patterns — and discuss motivations for this perspective in the context of machine learning. We show the definition to be computationally tractable, and apply it to the domain of generative art, utilizing a collection of features drawn from image processing. We next...
متن کاملPower System Stability Improvement via TCSC Controller Employing a Multi-objective Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm Approach
This paper focuses on multi-objective designing of multi-machine Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator (TCSC) using Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm (SPEA). The TCSC parameters designing problem is converted to an optimization problem with the multi-objective function including the desired damping factor and the desired damping ratio of the power system modes, which is solved by a SPEA ...
متن کاملA Continuous Plane Model to Machine Layout Problems Considering Pick-Up and Drop-Off Points: An Evolutionary Algorithm
One of the well-known evolutionary algorithms inspired by biological evolution is genetic algorithm (GA) that is employed as a robust and global optimization tool to search for the best or near-optimal solution with the search space. In this paper, this algorithm is used to solve unequalsized machines (or intra-cell) layout problems considering pick-up and drop-off (input/output) points. Such p...
متن کاملIn Praise of Evolution and Opacity
1. The perspective I bring to questions of creativity in man and machine reflects my background in evolutionary robotics, which I consider an exercise in philosophy of mind, trying to understand the relationship between Behaviour and Mechanism. I have a suitcase full of philosophical premises and assumptions; some of these are common, some will be identifiable as associated with a Dynamical Sys...
